PAPER TRIO
HIPPO ROAD
The Paper Trio was created when Thomas was asked to play a concert at a Paper Museum/Gallery in the countryside of Denmark. Luck had it that Randi and I were the other 2 musicians in the band.
But the gig had its caveats. We could only get money if we used actual paper to make our sounds. So we all scrambled to find interesting types of paper in the studio there and we briefly practiced incorporating these sounds to our normal trio world.
Lo and behold! It worked. The public loved the paper sounds and the Paper Trio was born. After that concert we were all inspired to take this trio into the studio and capture these sounds, and more.
You can hear the recorded sounds of paper stamping machines and other paper fabrication machines used. Each piece was introduced in the studio simply with a mood or title, and then we started to play.
We hope you enjoy this effort as much as we have enjoyed making it.
14 etudes of Randi, Thomas and Greg put into one mighty set where improvised music blends with intuition, impossible dynamics and abstract and non-linear narrative.
Somewhere between free jazz, open form improvisations, sonorous textures and frenetic type of dynamics it won't let you sit down in one place.
It is pretty difficult to list all the influences and bits that you can associate with. I feel this is unnecessary and also leaves more space for things that can drive your magination wherever you take it.
Excellent part of it - is just impossible array of technicality to the play of all the musicians here as well as their education .yes, it is all abstract but at the same time intoxicating and involving.

Earth Calls concert first version USMIFKA 9-11 - 2016 ... In 1977 the spacecraft Voyager was sent on to a scientific journey into space. On board was "The Golden Record": a CD on which scientists had carefully chosen different fragments of sounds from the planet Earth. A message in a bottle, sent into the vast cosmic sea hoping to encounter with foreign civilisations. Among many other things, on the CD was the bulgarian folksong: "Izlel e delju Haidutin". The Voyager-spacecraft has recorded the interaction between the solarwind and the magnetic fields from the planets in our solarsystem. NASA has transformed these vibrations into sound, and thereby made it possible for the human ear to "hear" the planets.

All compositions by Thomas Agergaard and Lars Jansson
Garden of Sounds is a fascinating jazz collaboration by Swedish pianist/composer Lars Jansson and Danish saxophonist/flutist/composer Thomas Agergaard. Both artists are celebrated as significant, influential figures in Scandinavian jazz, and this album pays homage to some of their own greatest influences including John Cage, Wayne Shorter, Keith Jarrett, Charlie Haden, Duke Ellington and George Gershwin. The eighteen tracks on the album are seventeen originals by the two composers, both singly and jointly, plus their arrangement of Gershwin's "I Loves You Porgy."
The album has a very "live," immediate feeling much like being in the room with the performers and experiencing the music as it is created. A significant portion of the album is comprised of two "Birds Flying Suites."
The first Suite is in three parts and the second is in four and both are freely improvised adventures in musical discovery. Although the two artists have performed together often, they had never ventured into this form of improvisation before, and the results are both inspiring and beautiful to listen to. In his liner notes for the album, producer Thomas Lyngdam-Lange says: "A sense of space is how I would describe this project, and what I am searching for as a producer. To find the rooms or niches in the music where the unexpected happens. This album is full of these moments."
Garden of Sounds begins with the title track, Lars Jansson's homage to American classical composer John Cage (1912-92). Smooth, open and very soulful, Jansson's piano and Agergaard's sax let us know right away that we are embarking on a very special musical experience!
Agergaard's "Everyday" is a celebration of the magic in the quiet moments of everyday life. Very relaxed and smooth with a hint of mystery, it's a favorite.
"Kids Playing" (Jansson) expresses the joy and freedom of being "in the moment" combined with the innocence of children just being themselves and following their imaginations.
"I Loves You Porgy" comes from George Gershwin's folk opera, Porgy and Bess, and Agergaard's arrangement was inspired by Keith Jarret's recording of the song. Both artists really shine on this one! Uncomplicated and from the heart, it's also a favorite.
"Birds Flying Suite 1" features Agergaard on alto flute along with Jansson's piano, and all three parts of the suite express the ease and freedom of birds in flight, letting the wind currents and breezes carry them along.
"Memories Of Summer" (Agergaard) was composed on a summer morning - "The melody was just there in the room." Smooth and carefree with an infectious piano rhythm, this one feels very blissful to me.
"Quiet View" (Agergaard) is much darker and more somber - almost an instrumental soliloquy. I really like this one, too!
"A Rare Italian Bird" (Jansson) is a tribute to the Italian clarinetist and ornithologist Gabriele Mirabassi. A duet for piano and flute, it is also a nod to John Cage, as playing Cage's music is one of Mirabassi's favorite things to do.
The second "Birds Flying Suite" feels even more spontaneous than the first one and is a mix of sax and piano, and flute and piano. The interplay between the musicians is sometimes mysterious and sometimes playful, but is always honest and in the moment. I love the rhythmic piano groove and how it contrasts with the flute in Part 4 - a great ending to an excellent album!

Over several years, Agergaard and Tuznik have developed their unique collaboration. In 2022 they released their first album, Cascade - recorded in the Concert Hall at Rosenørns Alle. It is a completely improvised work, where we work across styles and with radical changes of moods and styles. We ourselves feel that we contribute with a new and radically developed intuitive interplay. The gradually many concerts we have played, each concert stood on its own with a specific repertoire for each concert. This style will continue and we hope you will give us the opportunity under your auspices. They have developed their interplay from fixed forms to completely open processes, where stylistic directions can change suddenly and at any time, but somehow it is always an organic musical transformation. Cascades is an intense journey without a safety net, a journey where stylistic designations are abolished, but images from the history of music suddenly arise, from late romantic processes to impressionism, and into jazz and contemporary music

Organic, Sensitive, and Gentle
Third Voyage: Captain Grant's Children
(Time Span Records/Gateway)
The three jazz musicians Martin Maretti Andersen on drums, Thomas Agergaard on saxophone, and Torben Westergaard on electric bass have released an album titled Captain Grant's Children under the name Third Voyage. It is a vibrant, organic record where the tones seem to emerge from one another. It embodies a sensitive and gentle spirit that is not far from the Motian/Lovano/Frisell trio—only with more pulse.
On a journey along the 37th parallel, Captain Grant's children are searching for their father. This is the ultrashort version of Jules Verne's novel Captain Grant's Children from 1868, which lends its title to the album.
In a similar manner, the trio Third Voyage is also engaged in an exploration where they encounter new and unknown worlds along the way. The journey is taken with the familiar means of transport—jazz. The three musicians belong to an exclusive group of strong Danish musical personalities, each contributing their own musical identity, and when blended together, something new and unique emerges.
The album was recorded in five hours in one day and beautifully documents a unique trio. Torben Westergaard plays a wonderfully resonant, dynamic bass. Martin Maretti Andersen's drumming constantly pulses, and with the added percussion, it creates a very rich soundscape. Thomas Agergaard is often praised for his strong personal tone, which is no exception on Captain Grant's Children

‘Third stream’ was, half a century ago, the term for a hybrid music form that sought to bridge jazz and classical music. But even before that, Igor Stravinsky had composed his ‘Ebony Concerto’ for Benny Goodman’s orchestra, and I also feel that one can hear him playfully in the background on a CD where the tenor saxophonist presents himself as the composer of a number of pieces that similarly navigate across the two musical camps.
Outstanding Performance.
On the other hand, there are pieces of a cheerful, if not quirky character, among which there are several highlights. First and foremost is ‘Young’, but ‘Sign’ also stands out as a delightful contribution with its floating feeling, featuring drummer Peter Bruun, whose stimulating playing throughout greatly enhances the music.
And I must say that the four fully composed pieces Agergaard has written for the classical wind quintet are extraordinarily expressive in their concise form and outstanding performance.

The trio consists of Tchicai, alongside co-saxophonist Thomas Agergaard, who is 30 years his junior, and drummer Peter Ole Jørgensen. Supporting the trio is American bassist Sirone, a well-established name in improvisational music, perhaps best known for his work with The Revolutionary Ensemble Trio in the 1970s.
The first real glimpse into the rabbit hole comes with the album’s fourth track, “Backyard Trouble.” The progressive interplay of saxophones and drums constantly pushes forward, occasionally finding common ground—only to leap onto the next phase. Here, the two saxophones assert their power, sometimes uniting into the solid sound of a foghorn and at other times diverging into the boiling whistle of a kettle, crying out for resolution.
Relief comes in the form of a bow stroke on the double bass. You could call it random scraping and dissonance, but when set against a ferociously screaming sax solo, it proves to be a fantastic contrast.

This octet does not reinvent modern jazz yet communicates a distinctively appealing yet stylized demeanor, which works wonders. Danish Jazz is on the move once again and for those of you in the New York City area this September, be sure to catch the Danish Jazz festival at various locations in or around the City. It should be well worth your time! * * * * ½
Tchicai:
"Regarding my ideas about the sequences, rhythmic structures, bassline melodies, and modules I’ve composed for ecstatic music-making, they have, to a great extent, been executed almost perfectly by the wonderful Ok Nok Kongo ensemble. How delightful it would be to always have these people nearby!
That said, as a jazz/improvisational composer, one cannot predict the final outcome. Half of the music depends on the soloists, and one can only hope that the material provided inspires artistic and spiritual contribution.
The fact that you feel your ears have been 'cleansed' after listening to this music is largely due to the general and consciously no-nonsense attitude of the entire orchestra."

The re-release of Thomas Agergaard Quartet's “Testing 1-2-3-4” offers an unexpectedly positive experience.
This is jazz!
The brilliant interplay between four of the most promising musical minds at the time of recording unfolds in an uncharted musical landscape, guided solely by their readiness and highly refined ability to respond to any impulse reaching their inner ear. It stands as a shining example of how far this beautiful and improvisational art form can take you.

Og vinderen er…
Thomas Agergaard vandt Koldingbibliotekernes konkurrence om en musikskulptur, der byder brugerne af biblioteket velkommen til musikkens verden.
Thomas Agergaard has a background as a jazz saxophonist. He often experiments with different expressions in his CD releases, all of which share the commonality of being very well composed. This is also true for the sound installation "Growth."
As an intelligent ambient music, it unfolds in five movements that primarily differ from each other in their approach to the overall sound. The five movements represent distinct nuances or approaches to the work's overarching soundscape—like stages or segments in a cohesive progression. The CD includes two additional tracks that nicely blend into the overall aesthetics but also exist independently in terms of sound and form.
The music is pleasant to listen to as background, while also rewarding attentive listening. The composer feels present as both playful and tightly structured. Due to Agergaard's ability to simultaneously maintain and vary a core idea, it is simply interesting to listen to. All the time.
